The Heart is a Bridge

15 August 1997 - 24 August 1997

Carlos Estevez

The Heart is a Bridge was an exhibition of large works on paper and sculpture by the artist Carlos Estevez. It was the culmination of his three-month residency at Gasworks. Estevez was born in Havana, Cuba in 1969 and graduated from the Instituto Superior de Arte in Havana in 1992. He recently took part in the VI Havana Bienale where he created an installation. The Heart is a Bridge was his first solo show in London.

Estevez's
drawings incorporate different media such as watercolour pastel, ink and pencil. His imagery is developed from various sources which include plans of old buildings, medical illustrations from the Renaissance and Leonardo da Vinci's drawings of flying machines. Using these technical drawings as a starting point he works on the overlaying images of the human form thus merging the characteristics of both.
