Javier Tellez first solo exhibition in the U.K investigated links between mental illness and art. Gasworks organised a residency for Tellez at the Royal Bethlem Hospital, where the artist filmed trainee psychiatric nurses being taught control and restraint technique this formed the video element of his installation, which could be viewed from a specially constructed eight-foot high nest-box which itself was filled with smaller nest boxes, made by patients at the hospital.

installation focused on his interest in the tensions between the institutional architecture of psychiatric hospitals and their occupants, space and power. His work comes from a background in psychiatry and an immersion in what he views as the equivalent spaces of the psychiatric institution and the museum.

Javier Tellez was born in Venezuela. He was visiting artist at Gasworks following residencies at PS1 in New York and the Independent Studio Program at the Whitney Museum, New York. He has had major exhibitions in New York and Caracas. Tellez will participate in the Kwanglu Biennale in Korea in 2000.
