The Sentient Skin contains a series of recent painting that utilise the decorative, sensual and even romantic aspects of painting. In these new works, a process of 'layering' has evolved that engages the viewer in an act of unraveling, to reveal the means by which they are made. By painting on the reverse of the canvas, Cummins paints beneath the surface skin of the work visually taking the audience on a journey whilst also using the surface of the canvas as a body skin on which to register sensual and tactile marks. In these paintings Sean Cummins manipulates decorative elements on the sentient exterior, making visual equivalents to the visceral world beneath.

Sean Cummins is a resident artist at Gasworks Studios and exhibited in the Whitechapel Open and Lead and Follow at the Atlantis Gallery, London.
