As part of Gasworks' families programme Even Better Together, artist Abigail Hunt ran eight art workshops for parents with children under 5 at Ethelred Children’s Centre and Vauxhall Children’s Centre. Families worked in groups, creating and developing stories and characters for their own animation.

The first session introduced families to drawing together and how it could be used as a way to communicate an idea or feeling. Large sheets of recycled card were used so that the families could think big, creating large scale drawings using crayons, coloured pencils, tape and stickers. These materials were chosen to allow each participant to explore colour and texture and each family worked collaboratively to think about a story using the different family members as the characters for their animations.

In the next two sessions, families continued making their characters and began building their sets for the animation, while also planning what props they would include in their stories. These included trees, fruits, clouds, trains and houses that they had begun to develop in their narratives. While making their backgrounds, the families started to use acrylic paint to experiment with mixing colours as well as creating different brush strokes and tones.

In the last session the families filmed their animations. After rehearsing each film, the families worked together to perform their stories and capture them on film. Finally, credits and titles were added to finish off the films. Stories developed over the fours weeks included Victoria's Apple Tree, The Warrens Fight and The Robot.

Special family screening at Gasworks

Families from Ethelred Children Centre who had taken part in Even Better Together workshops with artist Abbie Hunt came to Gasworks for a special screening of the animation they had made. The families sat back and enjoyed seeing their work projected on the screen, sharing with the group what they had done to make the films and retelling the stories behind each of their animations.

After the screening, families had the option to stay for an activity responding to the Aurélien Froment exhibition. Looking at Froment’s exploration of sequential photographs illustrating the process of learning through demonstration, the families created their own pathway through the exhibition producing their own footprints and making their own trail through the gallery space. When collated together, the images reenacted Froment’s Fisherman’s Knot and Now I Bring in the Brick and Let's See what Rhymes with Brick pieces.
