During the October half term break students from St Stephen’s Church of England Primary School took part in a week-long residency at Gasworks.
Working onsite and using the Participation Space as their studio, pupils developed their art practice by working with different art materials and taking part in studio visits with London-based artists Lauren Godfrey and Anthea Hamilton, and international residency artist Freek Wambacq (Belgium).
As well as providing an opportunity to develop new work away from a school context the residency also invited students to develop their critical thinking through various group crits. Each student presented their ideas and the group offered reflections and comments.
The residency concluded with an open studios and performance where each student showed their work to family and Gasworks staff and artists.
The residency was conceived and developed by Pedro Lopes, Art Coordinator at St Stephen’s Church of England Primary school.
