Even Better Together - Working with families

Gasworks’ has an ongoing commitment to welcoming children and adults of all generations through activities for families. With discussion and collaboration at the heart of this programme, families experiment alongside each other and practicing artists and are encouraged to explore the open ended and team-work based process of making art. With this approach, everyone has something to contribute, regardless of their age and previous experience.

Even Better Together offers 75 contemporary art workshops to families living primarily in Lambeth and its neighbouring boroughs. Throughout 2008 and 2009 Gasworks led the majority of workshops in partnership with local family support organisations working off-site. In 2010, Even Better Together will welcome new families through partnerships, while also delivering more open workshops welcoming everyone.

Working in partnership with local family support organisations is vital for Even Better Together. As well as continuing the work with Archbishop Sumner Primary School, Fegans Child and Family Support, ATD Fourth World, Charles Edward Brooke Girl’s School and Hyde Southbank Homes, in 2009 Gasworks established new partnerships with Ethelred, Vauxhall and St Stephens Children's Centres, St.John the Divine Church of England Primary school and St Marks Primary School. All partners encourage families to attend workshops through their existing family support programmes.

During 2010 Gasworks will continue to deliver free workshops open to local families. The targeted programme of workshops will be devised in collaboration with artists and aims to strengthen current partnerships as well as develop new ways of engaging families. The workshops will take inspiration from all branches of activities at Gasworks, including the artists' residencies, the exhibitions programme and the links with the Triangle Arts Trust.

Even Better Together developed from a previous series of pilot workshops - Opening the Doors, which welcomed local families to collaborative activities during half term and summer holidays.

Even Better Together is kindly supported by the Big Lottery Fund.
