Jennifer Odem was born and grew up in New Orleans. The environment of Louisiana has had a significant influence on her work, particularly its landscape and industry. Her work in America utilized domestic objects such as spoons, strainers, funnels and containers that refer to themes associated with water and movement. The notion of 'mobility' is an important concern, with both physical and emotional implications.

In the Gasworks exhibition Odem continued this investigation with a new group of sculptures and drawings which focused on 'vessels' of transportation; boats, riverbeds and water currents. These ephemeral structures explore change and continuity examining the tenuous balance of spirit and substance in our lives.
