For his two month residency at Gasworks Nel continued his exploration of the mapping of images seen with eyes closed. His chosen medium of drawing offers him precision and permanence that enables him to grasp the ephemeral nature of the mental image.

He has over many years attempted through his drawings to be a cartographer of the mind's eye. This began with a three year Fulbright Placement at the University of California, Berkeley to look at the links between art and science. Here he spent time with physicists whose work involved high particle physics which in its own right could only be studied through mental constructions.

Karel Nel was born and educated in South Africa, later doing post-graduate study at St. Martin's School of Art in London and at Berkeley. He exhibits regularly in London's Cork Street and Los Angeles.
