Nancy Evans from California, was an artist in residence at the Gasworks, June - August 1995. She has exhibited at the Fawbust Gallery in New York and the Sue Spaid Fine Arts and Marc Foxx in Los Angeles. Her exhibition at the Gasworks was the first opportunity to see her work in London.
Nancy Evans makes unsettling paintings. Using only acrylic paint she builds surfaces that allude to a domestic world; they are reminiscent of many things; sweets, napkins, flowers. She eschews natural and organic colouring in favour of bright synthetic hues which create the desire to touch or taste but also hint at contamination. Evans' approach challenges notions of the completeness of painting. Each piece appears like a fragment of a continuing surface, using layering, casting and glazing to create works with a sense of an ongoing process.
