Spanish artist Paloma Polo lives and works in Amsterdam. Her residency at Gasworks is supported by the Dirección de Juventud at the Comunidad de Madrid.

Polo is interested in the history of science and technology and the political and ideological discourses that are constructed alongside it. During her residency at Gasworks, Polo will expand her research on the history of astronomy, namely the British expeditions to study eclipses. These expeditions, otherwise failed in scientific terms, paralleled political and economic colonial interests, which remain fairly unknown. This research will form part of her ongoing project The Path of Totality in which the artist explores how the conditions to socially, politically and scientifically legitimise technological experiments were constructed on the basis of imperialistic, expansionist ideals.

Forthcoming solo exhibitions by Paloma Polo include Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia, Madrid (2011) and Galería Maisterravalvuena, Madrid (2011). Recent solo exhibitions include The Precarious State, Skor, Amsterdam (2008) and Enough Redundancy in the System, Montehermoso Cultural Centre, Vitoria (2010). Her work has been part of Five Platonic Solids, Halfhouse, Barcelona (2010); Offspring 09, De Ateliers, Amsterdam (2009) and Muestra de Artes Plásticas del Injuve, Círculo de Bellas artes, Madrid (2009).
