Penny Siopis use 'found objects', including 'found' film, to make complex installations. She engaged issues from South Africa which focus on identity and belonging, public history and private memory. She combined official archives and personal documents to explore the contradictions and ambivalence of how it feels and what it might mean to be an 'African' of European descent.

She has exhibited widely both in South Africa and internationally. Shows include the Johannesburg Biennale in 1997, Le Memoire (Villa Medici, Rome) and Liberated Voices: Contemporary Art from South Africa (Museum of African Art, New York) in 1999. She lives in Johannesburg and lectures at Wits University.
