During her residency at Gasworks, Adelaide Cioni has produced a new limited edition series of drawings, titled Bello o piu bello (Beautiful or more beautiful). The series, which has been exclusively produced for Gasworks, is made up of 4 drawings, each screen-printed in an edition of 10, which can be purchased individually or as a full set.
Drawing is at the core of Cioni's practice, and whilst her work is expansive and includes textile, performance and painting, her fascination with shapes and patterns and their link to language is predominantly explored through drawing. The series 'Bello o più bello' hints at our tendency to look for oppositions between things, and to compare everything, often in totally absurd and aleatory ways. Written in Italian, the colourful shapes playfully offer translations to the phrases which in English are 'Beautiful or more beautiful', 'Before or after', 'Kant or Heidegger' and 'Long or very long'.
With a background in literary translation, having translated key American texts into Italian, Cioni's work breaks down language to its elemental form, utilising patterns to engage with a form of shared non-verbal communication that has existed throughout human history.
Adelaide Cioni lives and works in Bevagna. She studied drawing at UCLA, Los Angeles, and holds a BA in Sculpture from the Academy of Fine Arts in Rome (2015). With an MA in contemporary history and a master's degree in Literary Translation, for ten years she translated American literature.
Her recent projects include: Io dico io (I say I), Gallerian Nazionale, Rome; And the flowers too, Museo orto botanico, Rome; 141. Un secolo di disegno in Italia, Fondazione del Monte di Bologna e Ravenna, Bologna; Painting stone, Villa Lontana, Rome; Tout court. Un apercu de l'art italien, Instituto Italiano di Cultura, Paris; Dante. Un'epopea pop, MAR, Ravenna; Mirabilia, Casa Italia, XXXII Olympics, Tokyo; (all 2021); Ab ovo, solo stand for P420 in th curated section, Pittura XXI, Artefiera, Bologna (2020); Shape, color, taste, smell and sound, double solo show with Guy Mees, P420; Six or seven, Madonna del Pozzo, Spoleto (both 2019).); Arte per tutti, CIAC Gallery, Foligno; Che fare?, The Independent Project-MAXXI, Rome; Roar, Spazio Ulisse, Chiusi; and Pink punk performance, with Fabio Giorgi Alberti, da Franco, Rome (all 2018).
