Painted ceramic vase, artificial braid, dry flowers, photographs and sand
Each sculpture is unique with variations in colours and images
16 x 13 x 13cm
Edition of 8
These unique series of sculptures have been produced exclusively for Gasworks on the occasion of Patricia Domínguez' first UK solo exhibition Green Irises held at Gasworks in July 2019. Each sculpture is hand-made and consists of a painted ceramic vase filled with sand and stones from which a braid emerges. The braids come in a variation of colours and have been decorated with images of mass produced cosmetics, technology and food products as well as dried flowers and plants with healing powers. The braid represents the weaving together of different narratives, ranging from traditional ethnobotany and ritual practices to contemporary neoliberal emblems of consumption and branded wellbeing.
Patricia Domínguez explores healing practices emerging from the points where many worlds meet, clash and overlap as a result of colonial encounters. Rooted in the artist's ongoing investigation of ethnobotony in South America, her work invites the viewer to envision possible futures for humans and plants thriving in the cracks of modernity.
Patricia Domínguez is based in Santiago, Chile. Recent exhibitions include: SeMA Seoul Museum of Art, Korea; ARCO Madrid; Twin Gallery, Madrid (all 2018); Muesuo MAC, Santiago; Sala CCU, Santiago; CA2M, Madrid (2017); Pizzuti Collection, Ohio; Galeria Patricia Ready, Santiago (2016); El Museo del Barrio, New York; FLORA, Bogota (2013); The Watermill Center, New York (2010). She is the founder of Studio Vegetalista, an experimental platform for ethnobotanical research based in Santiago.
Please note that as is traditional in editions publishing, prices will increase as the work sells out.
